Glow With Mei

Welcome back to my blog ♥

Before moving to detailing every skincare routine step aside, I decided to talk about some not so common ingredients that became trendy in the k-beauty market, and that made many of us confused as to why and who should use them.

This is the 3rd part of this Skincare 101 series where I wanna cover the following parts during the next few weeks:

- What is your skin type?
- Korean skincare routine basics for beginners
- 10 not so common ingredients widely used in k-beauty  ← We are here
- Double cleansing: why should we double cleanse?
- Exfoliation: Chemical vs Physical
- Wash-off masks: Types and purposes
- Toners: Types, and how are they different from western toners?
- Acids and Actives: Vitamin C, BHA and AHA
- First essences: What are they exactly?
- Serums, Ampoules: What is the difference?
- Moisturizers: Lotion, Emulsion, Gel and Cream: What's the difference?
- Eye creams: Why should you use and eye cream?
- Sheet masks: Tips and Tricks
- Pores: how to deal with them?
- Acne: Products that helped me and my siblings to get rid of my acne.
PS: Keep in mind that I will include in each step some recommendations by skin type.

Snail? Horses? Bird nests? What are these? Should I use them?

If you are into Korean or Asian skincare in general, you would have probably heard about some not so common ingredients becoming trendy like snails, horse oil, milk donkey, starfish and so on... Here are some of their awesome benefits:

Snail Mucin:

If you live in Morocco, then you are probably familiar with not only how slimy these little creatures are, but also how delicious they are (yeah we eat them, don't judge. Snail soup or whatever it is called is one of the most delicious street foods here)
If you aren't, then depending on where you live you might consider them as some exotic tiny disgusting creatures, and might be quite weirded out by the idea of putting their slime on your face, but honestly I'm not. I used to gently rub a snail over my acne (and bugs bites) to speed up the healing process and diminish the itching even before getting into Korean beauty.

So what does it contain?
Researches have proven that the slime snails usually produce to protect and heal their fragile bodies from the hard and harsh external factors is actually packed with nutrients such as hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein, proteoglycans, and antimicrobial and copper peptides and other compounds that stimulates the formation of collagen and elastin, protects skin from free radicals, soothes skin, repairs damaged tissues and restores hydration. It can be used to treat dry skin, wrinkles and stretch marks, acne and rosacea, age spots, burns, scars...etc, It's practically a holy grail ingredient that can treat almost every skin concern

Is there any animal cruelty in the process?
As far as I know, there isn't. You can check this youtube video where they show how they harvest snail slime. It is interesting to watch.

Shop it: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence, $17.5, Amazon; COSRX Advanced Snail 92 All in one Cream, $17.5, Amazon; Mizon All In One Snail Repair Cream, $13.5, Amazon

Starfish Extract:

My mum was a really huge fan of Mizon Returning Starfish creams since they made her skin plump and reduced the appearance of her fine lines in the long run, but by the time she wanted to repurchased it was already discontinued...
There is next to no research about starfish extract benefits to the skin, and the few made ones say that it does a great job healing wounds and scars, but other than that, there is nothing I could find.

Horse Oil:

The first time I've heard about this oil is around 2 years ago when Guerisson came with their  9 Complex Horse Oil Cream, and since then it has been on my To Try list but never got around to purchase it.

Unlike most of the other animal fats, horse oil is packed with unsaturated fatty acids which is similar to natural sebum and thus accepted by our skin easily. It contains Linoleic acid (an omega-6) that is also found in vegetable oils and is known for its high moisturizing properties and its great ability to rebuild the moisture barrier of the skin and thus prevents the skin from becoming dry and dehydrated. As well as Alpha-Linolenic (an Omega-3) commonly found in seeds and vegetable oils, that is known for its great anti-inflammatory properties, which means it is good at calming the skin and de-swelling the pimples.

Is there any animal cruelty in the process?
Unfortunately, yes. But not in the way you think. They don't kill race horses specifically to extract this oil from them (which would be H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E), they extract this oil from horses raised for food and who are killed for their flesh.

Shop it: Guerisson 9 Complex Horse Oil Cream, $19.5, Amazon; Guerisson 9 Complex Horse Oil Hydrogel Gold Mask *6ea, $13, Amazon; Guerisson 9 Complex Essence, $14.5; Amazon

Donkey Milk:

Another interesting ingredient. This ingredient is known to be fairly similar to human milk, but is kinda hard to get since a female donkey produces 1L a day only, and stops lactating way sooner than other animals do.
Koreans aren't the first ones to start using this milk for beauty, since Cleopatra the old Egyptian queen used to soak her body in baths filled with donkey milk to get a soft and bright complexion - Story time:I've always seen scenes of Cleopatra bathing in milk but thought it was cow milk xD I even faked once "accidentally" pouring milk on my head because I thought it would make me a queen when I'll grow up... I was really naive.

This milk is known to be packed with nutrients such as proteins, phospholipids and ceramide that help regenerating and restructuring skin to help reduce wrinkle. It's also rich in minerals and vitamins (C, A, D, E) yet low in fats which makes it a great moisturiser for every skin type, sensitive skin included since it is hypoallergenic.

Shop it: Skin Ceramic Donkey Milk & Argan Oil Steam Cream, $39, Amazon; The Saem Royal Natural Donkey Milk Moist Drop Cream, $33, Amazon;

Syn-ake:

Originally used as an alternative to botox injections, this product became widely used in Korean anti-aging skincare (especially masks, ampoules and serums), is a synthetic form of snake venom that much like botox, works by reducing muscular contractions of the face as well as cell movement and thus keeping the skin smooth and prevent the formation or deepening of wrinkles.

Shop it: It's skin PRESTIGE SYN-AKE Agetox Cream, $41, Amazon; Dewytree Premium Syn-Ake Black Mask x10, $19, Amazon;

Bee Venom:

Whoever thought about this is actually a genius XD
Bee venom is actually used to trick the body and make it think that it's under attack and that is was actually stung by a bee, to make it redirect blood te that area and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin to strengthen the skin and keep it bouncy and elastic. It is also claimed that it kinda relaxes the muscles (just like the syn-ake) and reduces the appearance of wrinkles.

Shop it: Nature Republic Bee Venom Mist Essence, $19, Amazon; Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence, $17, Amazon

Caviar and Salmon Eggs:

Both these ingredients are know to be packed with minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, omega 3 and 6, vitamins, which helps maintain the skin moisture, brightens up the skin complexion and promote skin cells regeneration.

Shop it: Besolbo Royal Salmon Egg Return Cream / Sleeping Renewal Pack, $26, Amazon; Neogen Code 9 Gold Black Caviar Essence & Gold Tox Tightening Pack Kit, $48, Sokoglam (use this referral link to get 20% off your first order)

Sea Kelp:

Kelp and seaweeds are rich with amino acids, antioxidants and proteins, and known for their hydrating, softening and energizing properties, but I have never thought that they would make sheet masks out of fermented kelp instead of hydrogel or cotton sheets, but then, they come up with everything nowadays not only these.

Shop it: Whamisa Organic Sea Kelp Facial Sheet Mask, $14, GlowRecipe (use this referral link to get 20% off your order)

Pig Collagen:

Pig collagen is similar to the human one, that;s why they thought about including it in skincare and use it to smooth out the skin and boost its firmness and elasticity. But since pig collagen is voluminous, it can't really penetrate the skin so it only sits on top of the skin instead and gives it a smooth firm look temporarily.

Shop it: Elizavecca Green Piggy Collagen Jella Pack Pig Mask, $10, Amazon; SCINIC Pig Collagen Jelly Cream, $19, Amazon.

Birds nest:

Unlike the typical nests we know, Swiftlet nest is made out of this bird's dried and hardened saliva which makes it really impressive.
This nest is rich with nutrients such as amino acids and epidermal growth factor (EGF) that stimulate skin regeneration and promote blood circulation, which helps achieving a young, bright and radiant complexion.

Shop it: It's Skin PRESTIGE BN(Bird's Nest) Cream, $25, Amazon; It's Skin Prestige B.N. Eye Gold Patch, $24, Amazon.

Hopefully this post gave you a brief idea about what each of these ingredients are used for, this way it would be easier for you to know which one would work for you and which ones wouldn't.

No matter how long or short your skincare routine is, cleansing is a mandatory step that can't be skipped otherwise you'll have a lot of dead skin cells, makeup and impurities building up on your skin, clogging your pores, causing more breakout and skin irritation and preventing your skincare from reaching your skin getting its job done.

I've tried many first and second cleansers throughout the past few years, but there was one I just never got around to try yet has always been on the top of my "To Try" list was Troiareuke Oil Cut Cleansing (especially that two of my fav youtubers kept raving about it for ages)

For those of you who have never heard about this brand, Troiareuke is a professional prescription skincare brand, that provides personalized skincare prescriptions to give the perfect solution to different skin types and disorders.

MK Corporation started initially with Troipeel, a SPA brand, and after being asked multiple times by their customers about where they can find their treatments elsewhere, they decided to make Troiareuke, a skincare line that can be used by professionals as well as by individuals.

About a year ago, they came up with a new special line, designed for Acne and Sensitive skin, thus the name Acsen (Ac: acne + Sen: sensitive). This line provides a full customized skincare routine from the cleanser to the cream, they even made a bb cushion as a bonus (the infamous A+ cushion that is known for its special formula: 99% skincare and 1% makeup), and the main ingredients in this line are:

- Centella Asiatica: Powerful Recovery Energy
It restores damaged skin's external and internal cells. It has effect on the wounded areas. [Acne]+[Sensitive]
- Selemix An: Powerful acne and sensitive skin solution
A formulation between the Selenium and Magnolia bark extract that has been developed especially for acne and sensitive skin and gives a powerful energy: Germinating soybean extract and selenium recovers damaged skin and protects it from further external damage, and tree bark extract of Magnolol and Honokiol ease and control inflammation and kills Propionibacterium Acne(P.acne), the bacteria that causes acne.

Now that you are more familiar with this brand and this line, let's move to the actual review ~

Description and claims:

Acsen Oil Cut Cleansing is an all-in-1 hypoallergenic oil-free cleanser that has been selected by skin professionals to suit sensitive and acne-prone skin, and remove the deepest impurities softly.
Contrarily to most first cleansers that use oil ingredients to remove oil based particles, this one is:
- Oil Free, clear gel type, water wash off type
- Natural surfactant soapwort extract gives, perfection in cleansing acne and sensitive skin. Good cleansing effect but yet not making skin sensitive or dry after cleansing
- Papaya extract removes extra keratin
- Lotus extract gives moisturizing and soothing effect
- Micro-emulsion System gives perfect comfort to the skin which does not create skin irritation

How to use:

Cleanse and remove with disposable wipes and warm water.

Suitable for: All skin types.

Volume: 120ml

Ingredients:

Water, Butylene Glycol, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, PEG-8, Olive Oil PEG-7 Esters, 1,2-Hexanediol, Tromethamine, Acrylates/C10-30, Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Disodium EDTA, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Water, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Fragrance.

- Papaya Extract: acts as a mild exfoliator as well as an anti-inflammatory agent.
- Portulaca Oleracea Extract: Has skin-soothing properties and serves as an antioxidant.
- Aloevera extract: Moisturizing and calming effects
- Usnea Barbata Extract: Known for its anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties.

Packaging:

This cleanser comes in a neat and simple white plastic bottle with purple cap and accents, housed in a similarly designed glossy box .

Smell:

It smells vaguely like Pantene shampoos lol

Texture:

It has a watery gel consistency, more on the watery side, and isn't sticky or greasy at all.

Effectiveness:

Although I had very high expectations for this brand, I don't know why but I kinda doubted this particular product's ability to remove makeup and was planning to use it as a second cleanser only to prevent my skin getting any dryer, which always leads to lots of flakiness and breakouts in my case. But after using it for a week as a second cleanser, I run out of my Heimish All Clean Balm that I reviewed previously, and decided to give this one a try, and I was really surprised that it actually did remove my makeup and well, it did prove me wrong lol. I kinda feel guilty right now for doubting its ability to do what it claims, but now I'm fully convinced that I can rely on it as an All in One cleanser. so like you can see in the picture below, it was able to remove EVERYTHING, even water proof ones.

That being said, I think I will continue using my regular balm cleanser and foam cleanser, because although this product does its job perfectly, I don't think it is worth the price since I can use other products (that are less pricey) and achieve the same results, and I like how my Heimish all clean balm smell and I like to feel the foam all over my face so I absolutely don't mind using them everyday lol.

But if you have an extremely sensitive acne prone skin and you have a hard time finding a good cleanser that won't break you out and help you heal your skin, then I think that this cleanser is the right one for you, since it does get rid of all the gunk that built up your skin throughout the day without damaging it any further.

Summary

Pros:

- Gentle on the skin and doesn't irritate it nor dry it out.
- Removes all the gunk that builds up our skin throughout the day.
- Does a great job removing makeup.
- Made my skin really soft and smooth.
- Doesn't leave a greasy or sticky residue.

Cons:

- A little too pricey for my liking.

You can buy it:

Troiareuke ACSEN Oil Cut Cleansing can be purchased at Amazon for $39.98 (Prime)

Do I recommend it?
Like I said before, it is a really good product that does a great job removing makeup and getting rid of the gunk in our pores, it also makes the skin softer, but that's nothing other products can't do. So if you have a sensitive skin that is easily irritated by other cleansers, the this is absolutely the right cleanser for you, but if you don't have a problem using multiple products then you might want to consider a cheaper option :p

4.5/5

Have you ever tried this cleanser? what do you think about it? and if you didn't what are your current favorite cleansers?

If you are into Asian beauty, washing your face with a powder wouldn't be a weird concept for you, but if you aren't, you would be probably wondering how can something that closely resembles powder laundry detergents work for your face, well, all you have to do is read this review to find out how I personally feel about one of the many Enzyme Powder Face Washes and the latest to be launched I believe: By Wishtrend Green Tea & Enzyme Powder Wash

Description and claims:
This is a cleansing powder formulated with green tea powder, papain enzymes and baking powder. it maintains proprer pH balance of the skin so as to prevent irritation or dryness after cleansing. Green tea powder and baking soda act as an exfoliator, removing all of the skin's impurities.

Volume: 70g

Ingredients:
Sodium Bicarbonate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Powder(2%), Lysine HCL, Proline, Sodium Ascorbyl P
hosphate, Acetyl Methionine, Theanine, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Sorbitol, Papain, Betaine, Cellulose Gum, Citric Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate

pH Level: 5.5

How to use:
Dispense a small amount into the palm of your hand (or onto your cleansing tool), add water before  you lather it up. Gently massage it over your face and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.

Suitable for:
all skin types (esp. good for oily & acne-prone skin)

Packaging:

Scent and texture:

It's a semi fine powder that smells like dried green tea leaves or matcha, and lathers nicely when mixed with water and rubbed with your hands/your cleansing tool.
I think that this would make it last longer, and makes it travel friendly since liquid soaps tend to get all over the place when u put them inside your luggage, but still I honestly prefer the liquid ones for daily use. But who knows, I might get used to this form of cleansers and ditch all of my liquid cleansers.

The performance:

Whether you’re using your hands, a sponge, a cleansing brush or any other cleansing tool to cleanse your face, you’ll only need a small amount of powder to cleanse your face, but making a decent foam can be a little tricky since by adding too much or too little water, it probably won't foam (I had to use it 6 times before I learned what amount of water was just enough lol)
The first time I used it, I decided to test the pH to verify the company's claims, turns out that this cleanser's pH is actually 5.5, which is perfect for me, but still I was quite hesitant since the powdery consistency makes me think of powder laundry detergents, that usually leave an unpleasant residue on my hands, and dries them out. And since I have a dehydrated skin, stripping my skin out of its few natural oils is the last thing I need.
So after using it, I was surprised that it cleansed my skin thoroughly without leaving any residue, nor making my skin feel unnecessarily too tight, and I was left with a fresh clean face.
After using this product for more few times (about 2 weeks?), I felt my skin becoming softer and silkier than it used to be, so I think that the baking soda and the papain - a mild exfoliating enzyme derived from papaya- that this enzyme powder cleanser contains are doing their job. I also noticed that my redness is more under control, and my pores are getting smaller and almost non visible (maybe it's because the weather is getting colder? dunno, I'll have to try this product on someone with larger pores and update you guys.)
I think I'm gonna continue using this cleanser for now (since I'm out of my fav cleanser for now anyways) to see if I'm gonna love it more or discover any downsides later. I'm actually expecting it to make my skin softer as the times goes by, and ameliorate my skin moisture barrier. I'll make sure to update you guys later, so make sure to check this post back in a couple of weeks ^^

Summary

Pros:

- Travel friendly, you can put a little amount in a small bottle and keep it in your travel bag without worrying about it getting all over the place.
- Cleanses without stripping the skin from its moisture.
- No residue left
- Faint scent
- Calms down my skin
- Makes my skin softer and smoother

Cons:

- It's a little difficult to control the amount of powder you dispense.
- The bottle is a little too big for the amount of product there is inside.
- It can be a little tricky when adding water, too much or too little water and it wouldn't foam.

Would I repurchase it?

Maybe. I wanna try some other enzyme powder face washes and decide later. But I'm definitely gonna use this up until the last drop (granule I mean)

Where can you buy it?
It is available on Wishtrend*, it retails currently for $17.6  (instead of $22)

If you ask me what is my guilty pleasure, my answer would be: Lippies ♥
I've always loved trying new lipsticks/lip tints, but recently, I started going a little overboard and purchasing the whole collection, and one of the latest lippies I got are Etude House Dear Darling Oil Tint.
I have initially got 2 colors, and before even trying them out I found myself purchasing the remaining colors. So here is what I think about them.

Description and Claims:
Glossy Tint that sparkles with elasticity and volume.

Capacity: 4.5g

Packaging: 10/10
It is similar to all the other Etude house lip tints, the only difference is this one comes in an opaque bottle, with a metallic reflective cap.

Colors:

It comes in 8 pretty colors: Some of the look nothing like the official swatches (PK003 for example) and some others are close enough (PK001 and PP501)

Here is how it looks on my hand:

I had a hard time trying to take the colors in a way that they wouldn't look similar to each other (because they aren't similar at all), that's why I decided to swatch them on a white paper as well (I think the colors show better that way) just to give you an idea about how they actually look.

And now, Let's move on to the lip swatches (Keep in mind that my lips aren't that pigmented)

- RD301: It's a brownish red, one of the most opaque colors and one of the prettiest. Great for fall.

- RD302: I was expecting this one to be an orangish red, but turned out to be a pretty real red.

- OR201: It looks a little too red in pics but irl, it's beautiful bright (slightly) reddish orange.

- OR202: It's a pretty tangerine orange. One of my favs.

- PK001: A beautiful coraly pink, ideal for everyday use (it's like an mlbb for me)

- PK002: A bright hot pink, very true to the pic.

- PK003: It looks like a sheer gloss at first, but as time goes by it becomes a bright hot pink (I also noticed that the color differs from one person to another, just like how these green lippies do). I love this color but I was expecting it to be a blueish clear gloss, So I'm a little disappointed tbh. (I will upload a swatch later since my lips are pretty stained so it won't show)

- PP501: Another pretty color (they're all pretty tbh), A purplish pink (that my mom confiscated)

Scent: 10/10
Each color has its own distinct scent, but they do all smell sweet and fruity.

Texture: 9/10
The tint is thick and glides on smoothly, doesn't accentuate your dry patches and makes the lips look super nice. I feel like PK003 is the glossiest out of all of them, but maybe it's just me.
After applying it, it feels a little bit sticky, which is kinda normal when it comes to glossy lippies.
On days I don't feel like having something super glossy on my lips, I apply a translucent powder on top. It makes it look matte without affecting the moisture it provides.

Pigmentation: 8/10
Depending on the shades, some of theme are really pigmented, some others aren't. It also depends on how pigmented your lips are. So if you have really pigmented lips, then you might need to use a base underneath or something.
All of them leave a tint once they are wiped off, and the color of the tint depends on how long they stayed on. If you didn't eat anything and didn't touch your lips for, let's say, 8 hours, they will all leave a pink tint (different shades and hues of pink though), but if you wipe them off after one hour or so, the tint's color will be close to the original color.

I wiped the tints off 2 minutes after applying them and they've already stained my hand.

Hydration/Moisture: 9/10
Since it's an oil tint, it does moisturize the lips a little, but not as much as a lip balm.

Lasting Power: 8/10
It does a decent job lasting throughout the day, but it fades in the center of your lips after a greasy meal, and leaves a tint instead, that lasts for a pretty decent time.

Would I repurchase it?
I love them and I would probably get them again.

Where to buy:
- These lip tints retail for $8.10 at Amazon*
